beginner gym workout

16 Dec 2021

All god things begin with just one small step, one exciting Idea, one factor that motivates us. May it be the idea to pursue a career, further studies, build something new.

We have all been beginners at some point. It’s just that we do not realize how important and challenging this phase is when we are a child. This is why I always remind people that I was actively involved in sports and body building since I was 12 and hence It’s easier for me to build muscle and get shredded.

However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t know what it’s like to be a beginner. In fact, I’ll tell you a secret - I’m so reprehensibly, embarrassingly, terrified of being a DEEP SEA DIVER. I hypothesized that it was a combination of;

  • 1. The fact that I learned swimming just 2 months before I went down under for my DIVING COURSE. (little to no experience of open water swimming) and
  • 2. The many humiliating moments I had following that, Getting Scared, paranoid and aborting a DIVE on my course. But hey, I turned out to be a decent Diver sometime even Brilliant

Anyway; I could have just said that I was scared of water and did DEEP SEA DIVING for 10 years and knew how it felt to be a beginner but I didn’t. I went deep, maybe too deep. That’s the way we used to work, going deep in the depths of the sea. But, somehow I feel like you and me are close enough for me to drop this baggage right????

If not, lemme know.
So, back to being a beginner. I get it and it does suck, for many reasons, that I will discuss.

Let’s Dive into the Perks first:
The 3 Unavoidable benefits of an Exercise Beginner:

The New Feeling:

There is a certain excitement that accompanies you when you step on the gym or start with your first workout. The excitement is the same as Buying a new home or a car. You will never have that same level of excitement in training ever again. Embrace it and make it last as long as you can. The curiosity that emerges from you as a beginner is hard to match. You try and try again to perfect every movement and get things is place and this learning process keeps speeding up.

You progress at a much Faster rate:

There is a term “NEWBIE GAINS” which is associated and experienced by every exercise beginner irrespective of who that person is. Male or Female the ratio is the same. Let’s say it’s the benefit of specific neurological and muscular functions working together for the first time in a completely different manner. This is the main reason why you need goal specific customized plans right at the beginning, takes out the guess work and your progress is set on the right foot for life.

You’re ready to Learn:

With curiosity come humility which make you more eager to learn as you become a good listener. You acknowledge the inexperience and out your trust blindly in hands of an expert.
This enthusiasm and trust is so important for information application and retention. Keeping it open is the hardest part.

Let’s look at the 3 things everyone hates about being an exercise beginner.

Your Ego is Hurt:

There’s no running away from it. You might be the boss at your work but down at this you have to listen to instructions and push yourself out of an uncomfortable thing to get results. You start judging yourself and with
that come the self-doubt. But hey, wait.. DO NOT QUIT Try to push past this –
You will feel conscious at the gym or at the park seeing other people perform the same movements so efficiently, But remember it’s unfair to compare someone’s 500 day to other person’s day 1.

Easy to misguide and be used:

This can happen to anyone, and yes it happens a lot especially in today digital media world.
Educate yourself about your own body, observe what works for you and what your goals are. Think before reacting to any comments or advice, Invest sometime in learning about exercise, diets, gym workout etc.
After all, it’s your body and you are only allowed to make changes to it as per your comfort.

Scared of Failing:

As Kids, we all are taught that if we fail the society will not accept us right? But trust me, you actually never fail, you just set high targets an end up achieving less which is still more than what you had.
Let’s say you had a goal to loose 10 kgs in 3 months but you end up losing 8 kgs, so is it that you failed?? No, look at all the positives you gained is these 3 months. The new, better and more confident you etc.
Now I hope you are all charged up and open towards trying new exercises and bringing about a change to your health and fitness.

REMEMBER: It’s all about creating healthy habits.
